North Goa or South Goa? It changes the route

To Panaji and North Goa

From Belagavi, the driver can cross into Goa via the Chorla ghat, a scenic forest road that descends towards Sanquelim and Panaji. Alternatively, from Dharwad the road runs through Alnavar and Ramnagar to the Anmod ghat (NH 748), crossing Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary to Mollem and Ponda. Both lead to Panaji, from where Calangute, Baga, Candolim, Anjuna and Vagator are a short drive.

To South Goa

For Palolem, Agonda, Cola and Canacona, the coastal route often makes more sense. From Hubli, the road drops through Yellapur to Ankola on the coast, then follows NH 66 past Karwar into Goa at Polem. It also passes close to Gokarna, if you want to stop.

To Madgaon, Colva and Benaulim

Central-south beaches are reachable either via the Anmod ghat and Ponda, or via the coast; drivers decide based on the day's traffic and road conditions.

The Karnataka stretch

Most of the distance is in Karnataka on NH 48, a wide, busy highway. Key points on the way:

  • Tumakuru: the first breakfast option, once you are clear of Bangalore.
  • Chitradurga: famous for its massive stone fort with seven rings of walls, worth a stop if you have time.
  • Davangere: known for its benne dosa, a butter-rich local speciality.
  • Haveri and Ranebennur: long highway stretches through farmland and wind farms.
  • Hubli and Dharwad: the twin cities, a good lunch stop; pick up Dharwad pedha, the city's famous sweet.

Ghat roads into Goa

Each of the ghats into Goa has its quirks. The Anmod ghat has had long periods of poor road conditions and repair work. The Chorla ghat is narrow in places and beautiful in the monsoon. The coastal route via Karwar avoids a major ghat descent but is longer for North Goa. We check the current condition of each before your trip.

Permits and entry

A Karnataka taxi needs a Goa interstate permit to enter the state; we arrange it in advance. It is listed separately from the base fare, together with the many tolls on NH 48. Goa has its own rules on outstation taxis operating within the state, so if you want to use the same vehicle for sightseeing inside Goa over several days, tell us when booking and we will confirm what is allowed for your dates.

When to leave

A very early start, around 4 or 5 am, gets you clear of Tumakuru Road before traffic and onto the ghat in daylight, reaching Goa by late afternoon. Overnight trips are possible, since the NH 48 stretch has no forest closure, but crossing the ghats at night is slower and less pleasant, and you miss the views. For a relaxed trip, some families stop overnight in Hubli.

Seasons

November to February is peak season in Goa, with pleasant weather and busy beaches; hotels fill up around Christmas and New Year. March to May is hot but quieter. The monsoon from June to September closes many beach shacks and makes the sea rough, but the ghats and Dudhsagar region are lush and full of waterfalls.

Vehicles for the long haul

Couples can go comfortably in a Dzire or Etios. Families and friends' groups of five to seven often choose an Innova or Innova Crysta for the extra comfort over ten hours. Bigger groups, such as office trips, college gangs and destination weddings, book a Tempo Traveller 12+1, Force Urbania 16+1 or a mini bus, with space for luggage at the back.

Making it a road trip

If you have time, the drive itself can be part of the fun. Stop at Chitradurga fort, take the coastal route to see Gokarna and Karwar's Rabindranath Tagore beach, or detour to Dandeli for river rafting. Ask us for a multi-day itinerary with the same driver, and we will plan halts and permits so you can focus on the trip.

Highlights on the way

  • Route chosen for North Goa, South Goa or central beaches
  • Mostly on the wide NH 48 highway via Hubli–Dharwad
  • Chorla, Anmod or coastal Karwar entry depending on conditions
  • Goa permit arranged before departure
  • Optional stops at Chitradurga, Gokarna or Dandeli
