Gokarna is two places in one: an ancient pilgrimage town centred on the Mahabaleshwar temple, and a string of crescent beaches, Om, Kudle, Half Moon and Paradise, that draw travellers looking for something quieter than Goa. It lies about 490 km from Bangalore on the Uttara Kannada coast, a long day's drive of nine to ten hours. Our Bangalore to Gokarna cab can take the scenic route through Shivamogga and past Jog Falls, or the faster highway via Hubli, and drop you at your beach hut, guesthouse or temple-town lodge.

One-way fares include fuel and driver allowance (minimum 130 km). Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Bangalore, billed at the round-trip rate with a daily minimum. Tolls, parking and interstate permits are extra where they apply. Tempo Travellers, Urbania and mini buses are available for round trips.
The driver takes NH 48 to Tumakuru and NH 206 west through Tiptur, Kadur and Shivamogga to Sagara. From there, the road passes close to Jog Falls before descending the ghat to Honnavar on the coast. NH 66 then runs north through Kumta to the Gokarna turn-off. This route is green and beautiful, and a short stop at Jog turns the drive into part of the holiday. The ghat descent to Honnavar is winding, so allow time.
Alternatively, NH 48 runs north through Chitradurga, Davangere and Haveri to Hubli, then a highway descends through Yellapur and the forests of Uttara Kannada to Ankola on the coast, just north of Gokarna. It is longer in distance but mostly on wide highway, and some drivers find it quicker overall, especially for larger vehicles.
We pick the route based on your departure time, vehicle, the season and whether you want to see Jog Falls.
Gokarna's Mahabaleshwar temple is one of the most important Shiva shrines in South India, believed to house the Atmalinga brought by Ravana according to legend. Many pilgrims come for rituals on the beach and at the temple, especially during Shivaratri, when the town is packed. The narrow streets around Car Street and the temple are best explored on foot; your driver will drop you as close as vehicles are allowed.
Many stays are on or near Kudle and Om beaches. Share your property name when booking; some are a walk down steps from the nearest parking point.
Gokarna's beaches can have strong currents, and drownings have happened, especially during the monsoon when swimming is unsafe. Follow lifeguard flags and local advice, avoid swimming after dark or after drinking, and stay away from rocks during high tide.
Yana, with its towering black limestone rock formations, is about an hour away via Kumta and involves a short walk. Mirjan Fort, a laterite fort covered in moss, is near Kumta. Murudeshwar, with its giant Shiva statue and seaside temple, is about 75 km south. Further along, Honnavar's mangrove backwaters and the Sharavathi river boat rides are worth a few hours.
October to March is ideal: dry, sunny and calm at sea. April and May are hot and humid. From June to September, heavy monsoon rain sweeps the coast, beach shacks close, boats stop and the sea is dangerous, though the Malnad route via Jog Falls is spectacular at that time.
Nine to ten hours is a long day. If you prefer a gentler pace, stop overnight in Shivamogga or Sagara and see Jog Falls the next morning before heading to the coast. On the Hubli route, Hubli itself is a good overnight stop. A round trip lets the same driver take you around Gokarna, Yana and Murudeshwar and back to Bangalore; the driver allowance for overnight stays is included.
For couples and small groups of backpackers, a Dzire or Etios works well. Families with luggage or groups of friends often choose an Ertiga or Innova. Larger groups can book a Tempo Traveller 12+1 or Force Urbania 16+1, which are generally routed via Hubli and Ankola for easier ghat roads.
Fuel and the driver allowance are in the quote. Tolls on NH 48 or NH 66, and parking at Om beach, Jog Falls or Murudeshwar, are usually extra. As the trip stays within Karnataka, no interstate permit applies.

A coastal town at the mouth of the Sharavathi with mangrove backwaters and boat rides.
Gokarna's ancient Shiva temple, an important pilgrimage centre.

A seaside temple town with one of the world's tallest Shiva statues.
About nine to ten hours for roughly 490 km. Splitting the trip with a night in Shivamogga, Sagara or Hubli is a comfortable option.
Yes, if you take the route via Shivamogga and Sagara. Jog is close to the road down to Honnavar, and an hour's stop is enough to see the falls.
Cars can reach parking points above both beaches. Some guesthouses are a short walk down steps from there. Share your property name and we will confirm.
Currents can be strong, and swimming is unsafe in the monsoon. Follow lifeguard flags and local advice, and avoid swimming after dark.
Yes. Murudeshwar is about 75 km south. A round trip covering both, plus Yana or Jog Falls, works well over three or four days.
