The Chennai to Trichy route

The route leaves Chennai via Tambaram on GST Road, passing Chengalpattu, Melmaruvathur and Tindivanam. After Villupuram, the highway runs through Ulundurpet and Perambalur, with dry farmland and occasional rocky hills along the way. Samayapuram's Mariamman temple, about 20 km before Trichy, is a popular stop. The road then crosses the Kollidam and Kaveri rivers into the city, with Srirangam on the island between them. Exiting Chennai is the slowest part, particularly on Friday evenings and festival weekends.

Road tips for this drive

  • Leave Chennai before 6 am on weekends to avoid GST Road traffic.
  • Samayapuram and Srirangam are close to the highway entry into Trichy.
  • Add Thanjavur (about an hour further) to the same booking if you plan to visit the Brihadeeswarar temple.

Best time to travel

The Tamil Nadu plains are hot from March to June, so an early-morning departure from Chennai makes the drive far more comfortable and gets you past city traffic before it builds. The northeast monsoon (October to December) can bring sudden heavy showers; otherwise the highway is open and easy year-round.

Choosing your vehicle

A sedan is comfortable on this four-lane highway, and Tempo Travellers or mini buses suit temple-tour groups. Tell us how many people and bags are travelling and we will suggest a vehicle: a Swift Dzire or Etios for small parties, an Ertiga, Innova or Innova Crysta for families, or a Tempo Traveller 12+1, Force Urbania 16+1 or mini bus for groups.
