Leaving Kannur, the road heads south-east through Kuthuparamba towards the foot of the Western Ghats. At Nedumpoyil the ghat begins, climbing steeply with hairpin bends through forest to Periya and the Wayanad plateau. Mananthavady, the first town at the top, is the base for Thirunelli and Tholpetty. From there the road continues south through Panamaram or Koyilery towards Kalpetta, Vythiri and Meppadi, or east to Sulthan Bathery. Travel time on the plateau depends heavily on where your resort is, so share the exact location when booking.
Rain is the main factor here. Heavy monsoon spells between June and September slow the hill sections and can briefly close roads, while October to May is largely dry. Morning fog is common in the hills in winter, so drivers allow a little extra time for the 115 km.
The steep ghat climb with luggage is easiest in an Innova or Ertiga, while couples find a sedan perfectly adequate. A sedan (Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios) is the practical choice for up to four people. Pick an Ertiga, Innova or Innova Crysta for families and extra bags, and a Tempo Traveller, Force Urbania or mini bus when the whole group wants to travel to Wayanad together.
