One-way fares include fuel and driver allowance (minimum 130 km). Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Ooty, billed at the round-trip rate with a daily minimum. From Ooty the road heads west past Pykara Lake and Falls and the Naduvattam tea estates, then drops through the Gudalur ghat with views across the Mudumalai forest. Gudalur is a busy junction where roads split for Mysore, Kerala and Ooty. The route then continues through tea gardens and small border villages into Kerala, reaching Sulthan Bathery and finally Kalpetta, Meppadi or Vythiri depending on your stay. The road is narrow in places with frequent bends, but traffic is lighter than on the main Ooty–Mysore highway.
Monsoon months (June to September) turn the hills a deep green but bring mist, heavy rain and slower ghat driving on the way to Wayanad; landslide closures are possible in very wet spells. October to March is the most comfortable time, while long weekends bring heavier traffic around the hill towns.
Narrow hill roads at both ends suit a compact sedan or an Ertiga, with an Innova for larger families. Most small parties travel in a Swift Dzire or Etios.
