A Kannur to Coorg cab climbs from the Malabar coast into Kodagu's coffee hills in about 3–3.5 hours, covering roughly 115 km to Madikeri. The road runs inland via Mattannur, close to Kannur International Airport, then through Iritty and the forested Makkuttam Ghat to Virajpet. It is the quickest link between north Kerala and Coorg, and handy for airport pickups at Mattannur.

One-way fares are charged on at least 130 km. Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Kannur (230 km over 1 day, with a daily minimum). Toll, parking and state permit are extra.
From Kannur the road heads east through Chakkarakkal and Mattannur, passing the airport, to the riverside town of Iritty. Beyond Koottupuzha it enters the Makkuttam Ghat, a winding climb through the Brahmagiri forest that crosses into Karnataka at Makkuttam. The descent on the Coorg side leads to Perumbadi and Virajpet, the commercial centre of south Kodagu, from where it is another hour through coffee estates to Madikeri. The ghat has narrow sections and is prone to slips in heavy monsoon rain, so drivers check its status before setting out.
The Kannur to Coorg drive is beautiful in the rains, but from June to September expect mist, wet hairpins and occasional slips that cost time. Post-monsoon and winter (October to February) offer the clearest skies; summer weekends are busy, so an early start helps.
The ghat and estate roads suit an SUV such as the Ertiga or Innova, though sedans manage the main road comfortably. Every group size is covered for the Kannur to Coorg trip: Swift Dzire and Toyota Etios sedans, the seven-seater Maruti Ertiga, Toyota Innova and Innova Crysta, plus Tempo Traveller 12+1, Force Urbania 16+1 and mini buses for bigger parties.
