The Kannur to Bangalore route

From Kannur the road heads inland through Mattannur and Iritty, then winds up the Makkuttam Ghat to Virajpet in south Coorg. Passing Gonikoppal and the forest near Titimati, it reaches Hunsur and then the Mysore ring road. From Mysore, the access-controlled expressway carries you past Srirangapatna, Mandya and Ramanagara to Bangalore in around two hours, depending on the drop point. The ghat section is slow but scenic; the expressway makes up time at the end. Plan a meal break in Coorg or Mysore.

Road tips for this drive

  • The vehicle's Kerala–Karnataka interstate permit is arranged before the trip.
  • Check the Makkuttam Ghat status in the monsoon; we will suggest an alternative if it is affected.
  • For airport drops, add at least an hour for Bangalore traffic.

Best time to travel

Monsoon months (June to September) turn the hills a deep green but bring mist, heavy rain and slower ghat driving on the way to Bangalore; landslide closures are possible in very wet spells. October to March is the most comfortable time, while long weekends bring heavier traffic around the hill towns.

Choosing your vehicle

For seven to eight hours on the road, an Innova or Innova Crysta keeps families comfortable; sedans suit up to four light travellers. For two to four passengers a Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios is economical and comfortable. Families with more luggage usually pick a Maruti Ertiga, Toyota Innova or Innova Crysta, and groups can choose a Tempo Traveller 12+1, Force Urbania 16+1 or a mini bus.
