One-way fares include fuel and driver allowance (minimum 130 km). Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Madurai, billed at the round-trip rate with a daily minimum. Tolls, parking and interstate permits are extra where they apply. Tempo Travellers, Urbania and mini buses are available for round trips.
From Madurai the highway runs south past Thirumangalam and Virudhunagar, a trading town known for its parotta, through Kovilpatti, famous for its groundnut candy, to Tirunelveli on the Tamirabarani river. South of Tirunelveli the landscape changes as the road passes Nanguneri and the Muppandal area, where hundreds of wind turbines line the hills at the foot of the Western Ghats. The road then reaches Aralvaimozhi, Nagercoil's outskirts and Suchindram before ending at Kanyakumari. The driver can time arrival for sunset, or for an early-morning sunrise view the next day.
This road is open all year. The main considerations are summer heat from March to June, when a dawn start is wise, and the occasional heavy downpour during the October–December northeast monsoon. Festival weekends add traffic near Kanyakumari, so book ahead if you plan to travel then.
A sedan is ideal on this four-lane highway, with SUVs and Tempo Travellers for families and tour groups. Sedans such as the Swift Dzire and Toyota Etios suit couples and small families heading to Kanyakumari, while the Ertiga, Innova and Innova Crysta give extra legroom and boot space. Larger parties can book a Tempo Traveller 12+1, Force Urbania 16+1 or mini bus.
