A Madurai to Salem cab covers about 230 km in 4–4.5 hours on NH44, passing Dindigul, Karur and Namakkal. It is a quick four-lane highway drive, popular for business trips to Salem's steel and textile industries, family visits and holidays in the Yercaud hills just above the city. One-way drops and round trips are both available, with pickups from Madurai airport, Madurai Junction or anywhere in the city.

One-way fares include fuel and driver allowance (minimum 130 km). Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Madurai, billed at the round-trip rate with a daily minimum. Tolls, parking and interstate permits are extra where they apply. Tempo Travellers, Urbania and mini buses are available for round trips.
The highway leaves Madurai through Samayanallur and Vadipatti, reaching Dindigul in about an hour, with its rock fort visible from the road. North of Dindigul it crosses the plains via Vedasandur to Karur, then crosses the Kaveri near Paramathi-Velur on the way to Namakkal. Namakkal's fort and Anjaneyar temple are close to the highway bypass. The final hour passes Rasipuram before entering Salem. If you are heading on to Yercaud, the ghat road begins at the northern edge of the city and has 20 hairpin bends.
The Tamil Nadu plains are hot from March to June, so an early-morning departure from Madurai makes the drive far more comfortable and gets you past city traffic before it builds. The northeast monsoon (October to December) can bring sudden heavy showers; otherwise the highway is open and easy year-round.
This is a straightforward highway run, so a sedan suits most travellers; SUVs are available for families. Choose a Swift Dzire or Etios for light luggage and up to four travellers, an Ertiga or Innova for six to seven, or an Innova Crysta when you want the most comfortable ride over 230 km. Tempo Travellers, the Force Urbania and mini buses cover group trips.
