A Madurai to Rameswaram cab covers about 175 km in 3.5–4 hours on NH87, travelling east through Paramakudi and Ramanathapuram before crossing the sea to Pamban Island. It is one of Tamil Nadu's most important pilgrimage drives, linking the Meenakshi temple with the Ramanathaswamy temple, and many travellers continue to Dhanushkodi at the island's tip. One-way drops and round trips are both available.

One-way fares are charged on at least 130 km. Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Madurai (350 km over 1 day, with a daily minimum). Toll, parking and state permit are extra.
Leaving Madurai, the highway runs south-east across flat, dry farmland through Thiruppuvanam and Manamadurai to Paramakudi, a weaving town. Beyond Ramanathapuram, the district headquarters, the land narrows towards the coast at Mandapam, where the road crosses the Pamban road bridge, giving wide views of the sea and the railway bridge alongside. On the island the road continues to Rameswaram town and the temple. Dhanushkodi, about 20 km further, is reached by a new road ending at Arichal Munai, near the ruins of the old town destroyed by the 1964 cyclone.
The Tamil Nadu plains are hot from March to June, so an early-morning departure from Madurai makes the drive far more comfortable and gets you past city traffic before it builds. The northeast monsoon (October to December) can bring sudden heavy showers; otherwise the highway is open and easy year-round.
A sedan is comfortable on NH87, while pilgrim families and groups often choose an Innova or Tempo Traveller. For two to four passengers a Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios is economical and comfortable. Families with more luggage usually pick a Maruti Ertiga, Toyota Innova or Innova Crysta, and groups can choose a Tempo Traveller 12+1, Force Urbania 16+1 or a mini bus.
