One-way fares include fuel and driver allowance (minimum 130 km). Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Madurai, billed at the round-trip rate with a daily minimum. Tolls, parking and interstate permits are extra where they apply. Tempo Travellers, Urbania and mini buses are available for round trips.

The Madurai to Mysore route

From Madurai the drive follows NH44 to Dindigul, then heads north via Vedasandur and Karur, crossing the Kaveri near Erode. Beyond Erode the road passes Gobichettipalayam and Sathyamangalam to Bannari, where the Dhimbam Ghat climbs 27 hairpin bends through the tiger reserve to Hasanur and the Karnataka border. On the plateau, Chamarajanagar and Nanjangud lead into Mysore from the south. Because the forest section must be crossed in daylight, departure from Madurai is planned for very early morning. The alternative via Salem, Krishnagiri and Bangalore adds distance but uses four-lane highways throughout.

Road tips for this drive

  • Night traffic restrictions apply through the Sathyamangalam forest, so leave Madurai before dawn.
  • The vehicle's Tamil Nadu–Karnataka interstate permit is arranged in advance.
  • Erode or Sathyamangalam are good places for a lunch break before the ghat.

Best time to travel

Season matters less than the clock on this route: night traffic restrictions apply through the forest, so the journey is built around crossing the reserve in daylight. The monsoon (June to September) adds rain and slower hairpins, and the dry months bring clearer roads and frequent wildlife sightings.

Choosing your vehicle

For a full day on the road, an Innova or Innova Crysta is strongly recommended for families. Choose a Swift Dzire or Etios for light luggage and up to four travellers, an Ertiga or Innova for six to seven, or an Innova Crysta when you want the most comfortable ride over 430 km. Tempo Travellers, the Force Urbania and mini buses cover group trips.
