Our Ooty to Madurai cab takes you from the Nilgiri hills to the temple city in about 7–8 hours, a journey of roughly 300 km. After descending via Coonoor and Mettupalayam, the route crosses Coimbatore and runs south-east through Palladam, Dharapuram and Dindigul. It is a popular choice for travellers combining an Ooty holiday with a visit to the Meenakshi Amman temple.

One-way fares are charged on at least 130 km. Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Ooty (600 km over 2 days, with a daily minimum). Toll, parking and state permit are extra.
The first stretch is the Nilgiri ghat down to Mettupalayam, with 14 hairpin bends below Coonoor. Drivers usually bypass central Coimbatore and head through Palladam and Dharapuram towards Oddanchatram and Dindigul, where the road joins NH44 for the final run into Madurai. An alternative via Pollachi, Udumalpet and Palani lets you visit the Palani hill temple on the way. The landscape changes from tea estates to coconut groves and dry farmland, with the Dindigul rock fort marking the last hour of the journey.
Ooty is cool year-round, but the plains beyond Mettupalayam warm up quickly. The Tamil Nadu plains are hot from March to June, so an early-morning departure from Ooty makes the drive far more comfortable and gets you past city traffic before it builds. The northeast monsoon (October to December) can bring sudden heavy showers; otherwise the highway is open and easy year-round.
It is a long day with a ghat at the start, so an Innova or Innova Crysta gives the most comfort for families. Tell us how many people and bags are travelling and we will suggest a vehicle: a Swift Dzire or Etios for small parties, an Ertiga, Innova or Innova Crysta for families, or a Tempo Traveller 12+1, Force Urbania 16+1 or mini bus for groups.
