Our Ooty to Mysore cab covers about 125 km in 3.5–4 hours, descending from the Nilgiris through two tiger reserves to the Mysore plains. The road passes Mudumalai, Bandipur, Gundlupet and Nanjangud before entering the palace city. It is a short but memorable drive, with frequent wildlife sightings and an easy finish on level highway, ideal for a Mysore sightseeing day or onward train from Mysore Junction.

One-way fares include fuel and driver allowance (minimum 130 km). Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Ooty, billed at the round-trip rate with a daily minimum. Tolls, parking and interstate permits are extra where they apply. Tempo Travellers, Urbania and mini buses are available for round trips.
The descent from Ooty follows either the Kalhatti Ghat via Masinagudi, a short but very steep road with 36 hairpins, or the longer route via Pykara and Gudalur. Both reach Theppakadu in Mudumalai and cross the Moyar river into Karnataka at Kekkanahalla, the entry to Bandipur. After the forest the road opens into the farmland of Gundlupet, with views of Gopalaswamy Betta on the left, and continues via Begur and Nanjangud into Mysore. Drivers do not stop inside the reserves, but slow down for animals crossing.
Season matters less than the clock on this route: night traffic restrictions apply through the forest, so the journey is built around crossing the reserve in daylight. The monsoon (June to September) adds rain and slower hairpins, and the dry months bring clearer roads and frequent wildlife sightings.
The steep descent and forest road are comfortable in any of our cars, though an SUV gives a smoother ride on the hairpins. Tell us how many people and bags are travelling and we will suggest a vehicle: a Swift Dzire or Etios for small parties, an Ertiga, Innova or Innova Crysta for families, or a Tempo Traveller 12+1, Force Urbania 16+1 or mini bus for groups.
