A Coorg to Mangalore cab drops from Madikeri's hills to the Arabian Sea coast in about 3.5–4 hours, covering roughly 140 km on NH275. The descent through the Sampaje Ghat is the highlight, followed by areca and coconut country around Sullia and Puttur. It is the quickest way from Coorg to Mangalore city, the airport at Bajpe, or onward trains and flights.

One-way fares are charged on at least 130 km. Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Coorg (280 km over 1 day, with a daily minimum). Toll, parking and state permit are extra.
Leaving Madikeri, the road heads west through coffee estates before plunging into the Sampaje Ghat, a series of bends through thick evergreen forest that marks the boundary between Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada. The air warms quickly as you descend. Sullia is the first town at the bottom, then the road passes Puttur and joins the Bangalore–Mangalore highway at BC Road for the final run into the city. Drivers allow extra time for heavy traffic around BC Road and the Mangalore suburbs, especially if you have a flight or train to catch.
The southwest monsoon (June to September) brings very heavy rain to the coast and the ghats between Coorg and Mangalore. Driving is slower, visibility drops and the occasional landslide can close a ghat for a while, so keep buffer time and let us suggest the open route on the day. October to March is the easiest season on this road.
A sedan handles the Sampaje Ghat comfortably, while groups with luggage often prefer an Innova or Ertiga. Over 3.5–4 hours on the road, seat space matters: the Ertiga suits a family of five or six, the Innova and Innova Crysta add comfort for long hauls, and the Swift Dzire or Etios keeps things simple for up to four. Groups of ten or more usually take a Tempo Traveller, Urbania or mini bus.
