One-way fares include fuel and driver allowance (minimum 130 km). Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Coorg, billed at the round-trip rate with a daily minimum. Tolls, parking and interstate permits are extra where they apply. Tempo Travellers, Urbania and mini buses are available for round trips.

The Coorg to Coimbatore route

The first leg follows NH275 down to Hunsur, from where drivers head to Mysore's ring road and then Nanjangud and Chamarajanagar. Beyond Chamarajanagar the road enters the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve and drops through the 27 hairpin bends of the Dhimbam Ghat to Bannari and Sathyamangalam. The last stretch runs through Gobichettipalayam or Annur farmland into Coimbatore. An alternative through Ooty and Mettupalayam is longer and slower but very scenic; ask if you would like to include it.

Road tips for this drive

  • Night traffic restrictions apply through the Sathyamangalam forest and Dhimbam Ghat, so start early from Coorg.
  • This trip crosses into Tamil Nadu; the vehicle's interstate permit is arranged before the trip.
  • Bannari Amman temple at the foot of the ghat is a popular short stop.

Best time to travel

Because night traffic restrictions apply through the forest, departure times from Coorg are planned so that the reserve is crossed in daylight. The forest is lush after the monsoon, and elephants, deer and gaur are often seen from the road; stopping and feeding animals is not allowed.

Choosing your vehicle

The Dhimbam hairpins and long distance make an Innova or Innova Crysta a comfortable option for families. Choose a Swift Dzire or Etios for light luggage and up to four travellers, an Ertiga or Innova for six to seven, or an Innova Crysta when you want the most comfortable ride over 325 km. Tempo Travellers, the Force Urbania and mini buses cover group trips.
