One-way fares include fuel and driver allowance (minimum 130 km). Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Coorg, billed at the round-trip rate with a daily minimum. Tolls, parking and interstate permits are extra where they apply. Tempo Travellers, Urbania and mini buses are available for round trips.

The Coorg to Ooty route

From Madikeri the road drops via Kushalnagar to Hunsur, where drivers often cut across to Nanjangud or Gundlupet without entering Mysore city. After Gundlupet, NH766 and the Ooty road enter Bandipur National Park and cross into Tamil Nadu at Mudumalai. The final climb to Ooty is either the steep Kalhatti Ghat via Masinagudi or the longer Gudalur–Naduvattam road past Pykara. Travellers from south Coorg (Gonikoppal, Virajpet) may instead go through Kutta, Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery and Gudalur, which crosses more forest.

Road tips for this drive

  • Night traffic restrictions apply through the forest, so start early enough to clear Bandipur and Mudumalai in daylight.
  • The trip crosses into Tamil Nadu; the vehicle's interstate permit is arranged before departure.
  • Gundlupet's sunflower and marigold fields are worth a quick photo stop between July and September.

Best time to travel

Night traffic restrictions apply through the forest reserves between Coorg and Ooty, so plan to cross the reserves in daylight. Monsoon months bring heavy rain to the forest belt and hairpins, while October to May is generally dry. Wildlife sightings from the road are common, but drivers do not stop inside the reserve.

Choosing your vehicle

Two hill sections make an SUV worthwhile for families, though a well-driven sedan handles the route well. Choose a Swift Dzire or Etios for light luggage and up to four travellers, an Ertiga or Innova for six to seven, or an Innova Crysta when you want the most comfortable ride over 250 km. Tempo Travellers, the Force Urbania and mini buses cover group trips.
