The Mangalore to Coorg route

The first hour is through the busy towns of BC Road and Puttur, with areca and coconut plantations lining the road. After Sullia the route enters the Sampaje Ghat, a winding climb through dense forest that crosses from Dakshina Kannada into Kodagu. The temperature drops as you gain height, and the final stretch passes coffee estates before reaching Madikeri. Many homestays lie off the main road on narrow estate lanes, so share your exact address when booking and the driver will plan the last few kilometres.

Road tips for this drive

  • Pickups from Mangalore International Airport at Bajpe are easy to arrange; share your flight number.
  • If your stay is near Virajpet or Kushalnagar, mention it so the driver plans the shortest road.
  • Carry a light jacket; Madikeri is noticeably cooler than the coast, especially in the evening.

Best time to travel

From June to September the Western Ghats receive some of the heaviest rain in India, and the ghat section of the Mangalore–Coorg road can be slowed or briefly closed by slips. Drivers check road status before departure. The dry months from October to March give clearer views and faster travel.

Choosing your vehicle

Estate roads to Coorg homestays can be narrow and steep, so an SUV is a sensible choice if your stay is off the main road. Every group size is covered for the Mangalore to Coorg trip: Swift Dzire and Toyota Etios sedans, the seven-seater Maruti Ertiga, Toyota Innova and Innova Crysta, plus Tempo Traveller 12+1, Force Urbania 16+1 and mini buses for bigger parties.
