A Coimbatore to Salem cab covers about 165 km in 3–3.5 hours on NH544, one of Tamil Nadu's busiest four-lane highways. The route passes Avinashi, Perundurai and Sankagiri, skirting Tiruppur and Erode. It is a quick, comfortable drive for business trips, family visits or travellers heading on to the Yercaud hills, which lie just above Salem in the Shevaroy range, about an hour's climb from the city.

One-way fares are charged on at least 130 km. Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Coimbatore (330 km over 1 day, with a daily minimum). Toll, parking and state permit are extra.
The highway leaves Coimbatore through Neelambur and runs past Avinashi, with Tiruppur's knitwear industry just to the south. At Perundurai it bypasses Erode and crosses the Kaveri near Bhavani and Komarapalayam, where the Bhavani river joins the Kaveri at the Kooduthurai sangamam. The final stretch passes the historic hill fort at Sankagiri before reaching Salem. If you are continuing to Yercaud, the ghat road with 20 hairpin bends starts on the northern edge of Salem and takes about an hour to climb.
The Tamil Nadu plains are hot from March to June, so an early-morning departure from Coimbatore makes the drive far more comfortable and gets you past city traffic before it builds. The northeast monsoon (October to December) can bring sudden heavy showers; otherwise the highway is open and easy year-round.
This is an easy highway run, so a Swift Dzire or Etios suits most travellers, with SUVs available for families. Sedans such as the Swift Dzire and Toyota Etios suit couples and small families heading to Salem, while the Ertiga, Innova and Innova Crysta give extra legroom and boot space. Larger parties can book a Tempo Traveller 12+1, Force Urbania 16+1 or mini bus.
