The Hyderabad to Tirupati route

The journey starts on NH44 through Shamshabad, Jadcherla and Kothakota to Kurnool on the Tungabhadra. From Kurnool the route turns south-east via Nandyal or Banaganapalle towards Kadapa, crossing the dry Rayalaseema landscape with its red hills and scrub forest. After Kadapa, the road runs through Rajampet and Kodur, a mango and banana growing area, and enters Tirupati from the north. An alternative via Srisailam is scenic but slower because of its forest ghat. From Tirupati, vehicles going up to Tirumala pass checks at Alipiri and follow the ghat road timings.

Road tips for this drive

  • The trip crosses from Telangana into Andhra Pradesh; the vehicle's permit is arranged in advance.
  • Ahobilam and the Gandikota canyon are possible detours for a two-day trip.
  • Tell us if you need a drop at Tirumala, so the driver can plan for the Alipiri checks.

Best time to travel

Summer heat on the plateau makes midday driving tiring, so most travellers start before sunrise and plan a long lunch break. Winter mornings can be hazy near the towns; drivers adjust speed accordingly and the wide four-lane sections keep progress steady towards Tirupati.

Choosing your vehicle

For pilgrim families on a ten-hour drive, an Innova or Innova Crysta is ideal; groups often choose a Tempo Traveller. Most small parties travel in a Swift Dzire or Etios. If you are carrying suitcases for a longer holiday, an Innova or Innova Crysta is worth the upgrade, and teams, pilgrim groups and wedding parties can book a Tempo Traveller 12+1, Urbania 16+1 or mini bus.
