A pilgrim town that runs on timing

Life in Tirupati revolves around Tirumala. Darshan tickets, accommodation and even meal times are often fixed in advance through the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, and a delay at any point can ripple through the rest of the day. Having a dedicated cab helps you stay on schedule: the driver waits while you complete one stage and is ready for the next, whether that is a ghat drive at dawn or a dash to the station after darshan.

Going up to Tirumala

Tirumala lies about 20 km up the ghat road from Tirupati, on the Seshachalam hills. Vehicles and luggage are screened at the Alipiri check post before the climb, and separate roads handle uphill and downhill traffic. The ghat roads are closed to vehicles for a few hours late at night, and the timings and rules can change. Our drivers follow the current instructions and can drop you at your cottage, the queue complex or the Kalyanakatta tonsuring centre. For devotees who prefer to walk, we can drop you at the start of the Alipiri or Srivari Mettu footpath and arrange to collect you at the top.

The local temple circuit

Tradition holds that a visit to Tirumala is complete only after seeing Goddess Padmavathi. A typical half-day or full-day circuit in and around Tirupati includes:

  • Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple, Tiruchanur: the shrine of the Lord's consort, about 5 km from the town centre.
  • Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple: a large temple in the heart of the old town with an imposing gopuram.
  • Kapila Theertham: a Shiva temple at the foot of the hills with a waterfall that flows after rains.
  • Sri Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple, Srinivasa Mangapuram: associated with the Lord's wedding, popular with newly married couples.
  • ISKCON Tirupati: a modern temple complex on the road towards Tirumala.

Day trips from Tirupati

  • Sri Kalahasti: about an hour away, the Shiva temple representing the element of wind, known for Rahu-Ketu pujas.
  • Kanipakam: the Varasidhi Vinayaka temple near Chittoor.
  • Chandragiri Fort: a Vijayanagara-era fort and palace with a museum, close to town.
  • Talakona: the highest waterfall in Andhra Pradesh, inside the Sri Venkateswara National Park.
  • Narayanavanam: the temple where the Lord is believed to have married Padmavathi.

Airport and railway pickups

Tirupati Airport is at Renigunta, about 15 km from the town. We meet flights and can take you directly to Tirumala, your hotel in Tirupati or onward to Sri Kalahasti. By rail, most trains stop at Tirupati Main station in the town centre or at Renigunta Junction a short drive away. Check your ticket for the station, and we will be there to receive you.

Outstation cabs from Tirupati

  • Chennai: about three and a half to four hours via Puttur and Tiruvallur, ideal for pilgrims flying home from Chennai airport.
  • Bangalore: around five hours via Chittoor, Palamaner and Kolar; drops to Kempegowda International Airport are also possible.
  • Vellore: roughly two and a half to three hours, perfect for combining Tirumala with the golden temple at Sripuram.
  • Mysore: a full-day drive via Bengaluru and the Mysuru Expressway.

Whether you need a single drop after darshan or a car that stays with you for the whole pilgrimage, the fare table on this page compares both.

Helping elders and families

Many pilgrims travel with parents or grandparents. Tell us when booking if anyone needs extra legroom, help with steps or a wheelchair, and we will suggest a suitable vehicle and drop points close to entrances where possible. An Innova or Innova Crysta is particularly comfortable for elderly travellers, while large family groups can book a Tempo Traveller, Force Urbania or mini bus. Couples and small families travelling light are well served by a Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios.

Festivals and crowds

The annual Brahmotsavam, usually held around September or October, draws enormous crowds to Tirumala for nine days of processions. Vaikunta Ekadasi, weekends, summer holidays and long public holidays are also extremely busy. During these times, allow extra time at every stage, from Alipiri checks to parking at the temples, and book transport early.

Weather and tips

Tirupati town is hot for much of the year, especially from April to June, while Tirumala is noticeably cooler. November to February is the most comfortable season. Keep your darshan tickets and ID handy, follow the temple dress code, and leave phones and cameras at the deposit counters before entering the main temple.
