Our Tirupati to Chennai cab covers about 135 km in 3–3.5 hours, heading south-east via Puttur, Uthukottai and Tiruvallur into the city. It is the most common way for pilgrims to return to Chennai after Tirumala darshan, and the cab can pick you up from Tirumala, Tirupati town, the railway station or Renigunta airport, then drop you at home, a hotel, Chennai Central or Chennai airport.

One-way fares include fuel and driver allowance (minimum 130 km). Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Tirupati, billed at the round-trip rate with a daily minimum. Tolls, parking and interstate permits are extra where they apply. Tempo Travellers, Urbania and mini buses are available for round trips.
Leaving Tirupati, the road passes Tiruchanur, home of the Padmavathi temple, then runs south through Vadamalapeta and Puttur in the Andhra Pradesh countryside. It crosses into Tamil Nadu near Uthukottai, with paddy fields and small temples along the way, and continues to Tiruvallur before entering Chennai via Avadi or Poonamallee. For drops near Chennai airport or south Chennai, drivers use the outer ring road. An alternative via Tiruttani is popular with pilgrims who want to visit the Murugan hill temple on the way back.
The Tamil Nadu plains are hot from March to June, so an early-morning departure from Tirupati makes the drive far more comfortable and gets you past city traffic before it builds. The northeast monsoon (October to December) can bring sudden heavy showers; otherwise the highway is open and easy year-round.
A sedan suits couples, while pilgrim families often prefer an Innova and larger groups a Tempo Traveller. Most small parties travel in a Swift Dzire or Etios. If you are carrying suitcases for a longer holiday, an Innova or Innova Crysta is worth the upgrade, and teams, pilgrim groups and wedding parties can book a Tempo Traveller 12+1, Urbania 16+1 or mini bus.
