Our Coimbatore to Chennai cab is a long highway journey of about 505 km, taking 8.5–9.5 hours. The main route follows NH544 to Salem, then heads north-east via Krishnagiri and Vellore on NH48 into Chennai. An alternative via Attur and Ulundurpet joins the GST road for southern Chennai. Both are four-lane for most of the way, with reliable food and fuel stops.

One-way fares are charged on at least 130 km. Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Coimbatore (1010 km over 3 days, with a daily minimum). Toll, parking and state permit are extra.
From Coimbatore the road passes Avinashi, Perundurai and Sankagiri to Salem. One option continues on NH44 to Krishnagiri and then NH48 through Vaniyambadi, Ambur and Vellore to Sriperumbudur and Chennai. The other leaves Salem via Attur and Kallakurichi to meet NH38 near Ulundurpet, then runs through Villupuram and Chengalpattu, which is convenient for Tambaram, OMR or the airport side of the city. The driver will choose based on your drop location and live traffic. Plan for one meal stop and a couple of short breaks.
This road is open all year. The main considerations are summer heat from March to June, when a dawn start is wise, and the occasional heavy downpour during the October–December northeast monsoon. Festival weekends add traffic near Chennai, so book ahead if you plan to travel then.
For a nine-hour drive, an Innova Crysta or Innova makes a real difference to comfort; sedans suit lighter travellers. Choose a Swift Dzire or Etios for light luggage and up to four travellers, an Ertiga or Innova for six to seven, or an Innova Crysta when you want the most comfortable ride over 505 km. Tempo Travellers, the Force Urbania and mini buses cover group trips.
