Mysore to Chennai is a full day on the road: about 480 km that cuts across southern Karnataka, skirts Bangalore and then follows NH 48 through Krishnagiri and Vellore to the Tamil Nadu capital. Plenty of people still choose to drive rather than fly or take the train, because a cab picks you up at home, carries everything you want to bring and drops you at the exact door in Chennai. Our Mysore to Chennai cab is assigned to drivers used to long highway days, in vehicles that stay comfortable for nine hours, and we plan breaks, the interstate permit and the Bangalore bypass for you.

One-way fares include fuel and driver allowance (minimum 130 km). Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Mysore, billed at the round-trip rate with a daily minimum. Tolls, parking and interstate permits are extra where they apply. Tempo Travellers, Urbania and mini buses are available for round trips.
Think of the trip in four legs, each with its own character.
The Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway gets you to the edge of Bangalore quickly. Rather than crossing the city, drivers usually take NICE Road or other ring roads around the south to reach Hosur Road, which can save an hour or more on a weekday.
You cross into Tamil Nadu at Attibele and Hosur. Krishnagiri, with its mango orchards and the big reservoir, is a typical breakfast or lunch break depending on your start time.
NH 48 runs through Vaniyambadi and Ambur, a town famous for its biryani, before reaching Vellore. If you are visiting the Christian Medical College or the Sripuram Golden Temple, Vellore is also a natural place to break the trip.
Past Ranipet and Sriperumbudur, traffic builds as you enter the metro area. Drops in central Chennai, T Nagar or Anna Nagar come through Poonamallee, while OMR and ECR destinations may be better reached by bypass roads. Sections of the new Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway have been opening in phases, and drivers use them where they help.
A very early start, around 4 or 5 am, is our usual recommendation. It gets you past Bangalore before the morning rush and into Chennai by early afternoon, before the city's evening peak. Overnight trips are also possible, as there are no forest sections on this route; we assign a well-rested driver and plan a mid-way break.
A Karnataka taxi needs a Tamil Nadu permit to travel to Chennai. We take care of it before departure and show it separately in your quote, together with tolls, which add up over a route this long. Fuel and the driver allowance are part of the quoted fare.
On a long trip, comfort matters more than on a short hop. A Dzire or Etios is fine for one or two people travelling light. For three or more, or for anyone with back trouble, the Innova Crysta is worth considering: better seats, more legroom and a calmer ride. Ertigas are a good middle option for families. Groups of ten or more can book a Tempo Traveller 12+1 or a Force Urbania, which also have space for luggage at the back.
Drivers stop roughly every two to three hours. Krishnagiri and Ambur are the most common stops, with plenty of highway restaurants serving South Indian meals. If you have dietary needs, carry snacks and tell the driver your preferences; he will know a few reliable places. Travellers with young children should pack a small bag of essentials within reach, as the longer gaps between towns after Krishnagiri make unplanned stops less convenient. Water bottles are worth carrying too, since the plains of northern Tamil Nadu can be very hot between March and June.
Chennai International Airport at Meenambakkam is reached via the Chennai bypass from Poonamallee, avoiding the city centre. For Chennai Central or Egmore stations, allow extra time in the late afternoon. Leaving Mysore eleven to twelve hours before a domestic flight gives a sensible buffer.
We also run Chennai to Mysore. A round trip with a stay in Chennai is often practical for families visiting relatives; the driver allowance for nights away is part of round-trip pricing.
The industrial town at the Karnataka–Tamil Nadu border where the route enters Tamil Nadu.
A town known for its mango orchards and the KRP dam, a popular highway break.
Famous for Ambur biryani, served in highway restaurants along NH 48.
Home to the Christian Medical College, the 16th-century Vellore Fort and the Sripuram Golden Temple.
An industrial hub and the site of the Rajiv Gandhi memorial, just before Chennai.
Around eight and a half to nine and a half hours including short breaks. Traffic around Bangalore and in Chennai can add time.
