Why base yourself in Hassan

Hassan town has a good range of hotels, a railway station on the Bengaluru–Mangaluru line and easy road links in every direction. From here, Belur and Halebidu are each under an hour away, Shravanabelagola is about the same, and Sakleshpur is closer still. A cab for a day or two lets you cover the district's highlights at a comfortable pace, without juggling bus timetables between small towns.

The Hoysala heritage circuit

Belur

The Chennakeshava temple at Belur was built in the 12th century to mark a Hoysala victory. Its star-shaped platform and walls are covered in friezes of elephants, dancers and scenes from the epics, and the bracket figures of celestial maidens under the eaves are among the most celebrated sculptures in India. The temple is still in worship.

Halebidu

Halebidu, once the Hoysala capital Dwarasamudra, is home to the Hoysaleswara temple, a twin-shrined monument with two large Nandi statues and outer walls carved in astonishing detail. Nearby are the Jain basadis and the Kedareshwara temple. Belur, Halebidu and Somanathapura near Mysore were inscribed together as the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas in 2023.

Planning the day

Belur and Halebidu are about 16 km apart and fit easily into one day from Hassan. Hire a guide at each site to understand the carvings; they bring the panels to life. Many travellers add Shravanabelagola on a second day.

Shravanabelagola

About an hour south-east of Hassan, the 57-foot statue of Gommateshwara, or Bahubali, stands on top of Vindhyagiri hill. Carved from a single block of granite over a thousand years ago, it is one of the most important Jain pilgrimage sites. The climb involves around 600 rock-cut steps, done barefoot; go early in the day to avoid the heat on the stone. The grand Mahamastakabhisheka ceremony is held roughly once every twelve years.

Sakleshpur and the Ghats

West of Hassan, the land rises into the Western Ghats around Sakleshpur. Coffee and cardamom estates, the star-shaped Manjarabad Fort and the Bisle Ghat viewpoint make this a refreshing change from temple sightseeing, and plantation homestays here are popular for weekend breaks.

Railway and bus pickups

We pick up from the station and from the KSRTC bus stand, and can take you straight to your hotel or directly to Belur, Halebidu or Shravanabelagola. If you are travelling by train to the coast and want to break the journey, a half-day temple tour between trains is possible with a little planning.

Outstation cabs from Hassan

  • Mysore: about 120 km via Holenarasipura and KR Nagar, around two and a half to three hours, a natural pairing with Somanathapura to complete the Hoysala trio.

Choosing a vehicle

A Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios suits couples and small families visiting the temples. For extended families or travellers heading on to estate stays in Sakleshpur, an Ertiga, Innova or Innova Crysta is more comfortable. School groups, Jain pilgrim parties and heritage tours often book a Tempo Traveller, Force Urbania or mini bus.

Best time to visit

October to February is ideal, with pleasant days for walking around the temples and climbing at Shravanabelagola. Summer, from March to May, is hot on the plateau, so start sightseeing early. The monsoon months bring greenery and full reservoirs, and the Sakleshpur hills are at their most beautiful, though heavy rain can slow travel in the Ghats.

Local tips

  • Carry socks for walking on hot stone at Shravanabelagola and the temple platforms.
  • Photography rules differ between sites, so check at the entrance.
  • Try a traditional Malnad meal in Sakleshpur or a simple South Indian thali in Hassan town.
