Taxi Service in Srirangapatna

Srirangapatna sits on an island in the Kaveri, a few kilometres from Mysore, and packs centuries of history into a small space. It was the capital of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, the site of the final Anglo-Mysore war in 1799 and, long before that, home to one of South India's most revered Vishnu temples. Savari Holidays provides taxis in Srirangapatna for temple and heritage tours, trips to Ranganathittu and KRS, ritual visits to the riverside ghats and outstation journeys to Bangalore, Trichy and Coimbatore. Our Mysore base is just a short drive away.

An island town of temples and battles

The Kaveri divides around Srirangapatna, creating an island about five kilometres long. Within it lie the remains of Tipu Sultan's fort, mosques and palaces, the great Ranganathaswamy temple and quiet ghats where families come for rites and prayers. Because the sights are scattered across the island and its outskirts, and summer afternoons can be hot, a cab is the most comfortable way to see them in a few hours.

A half-day heritage tour

  • Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple: a Vaishnava temple inside the fort walls, with a reclining image of Lord Ranganatha on the serpent Adishesha.
  • Jama Masjid: also called Masjid-e-Ala, built by Tipu Sultan, with two slender minarets visible from across the island.
  • Tipu's death spot and the Water Gate: small memorials marking where the Sultan fell in 1799 and where British troops entered the fort.
  • Colonel Bailey's Dungeon: a vaulted prison in the fort walls where British officers were held.
  • Daria Daulat Bagh: the summer palace, set in gardens, with painted walls depicting battle scenes and courtly life.
  • Gumbaz: the mausoleum of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, with ivory-inlaid doors and lacquered pillars.

Nature, rivers and nearby sights

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, a few kilometres upstream, is a cluster of small islets where painted storks, spoonbills, pelicans and egrets nest, with marsh crocodiles basking on the rocks. Boat rides run close to the nesting trees. The Kaveri Sangama, on the eastern tip of the island, is a peaceful riverside spot. Karighatta, a hill with a Venkateswara temple, offers views over the river and the Mysore plains. Balmuri and Edmuri, small cascades on the Kaveri, are popular for picnics, though water levels and access depend on the season. The KRS dam and Brindavan Gardens are about half an hour away and best visited in the evening.

Rituals at the riverside ghats

Many families come to Srirangapatna to perform shraddha, last rites and the immersion of ashes at the Paschimavahini ghats, where the river flows westward, or at the sangama. These visits are often arranged at short notice and involve elders. We can provide a vehicle at short notice, wait while the ceremony is completed, and suggest a larger vehicle if several family members are travelling together.

Getting here

Srirangapatna railway station lies on the Bengaluru–Mysuru line, and many trains stop here. The nearest airports are Mysore, with limited flights, and Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, about three and a half to four hours away. The Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway has an exit for the town, making road access easy. We pick up from the station, Mysore city, the airports and hotels in the area.

Outstation cabs from Srirangapatna

  • Bangalore: around two and a half to three hours on the Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway, with drops anywhere in the city or at the airport.
  • Trichy: a long pilgrimage drive into Tamil Nadu, popular with devotees who link the Ranganatha temple here, revered as Adi Ranga, with the great Ranganathaswamy temple at Srirangam, known as Antya Ranga. Many also include Shivanasamudra, home of the Madhya Ranga shrine.
  • Coimbatore: a drive south through Chamarajanagar and the Sathyamangalam ghat, or a longer route via the Nilgiris, depending on timing and forest rules.

The fare table on this page lists one-way and round-trip options by vehicle.

Combining Srirangapatna with Mysore

Srirangapatna is so close to Mysore that most visitors see both on the same trip. A popular plan is to spend the morning on the island, have lunch, visit the Mysore Palace in the afternoon and finish at Brindavan Gardens in the evening. If you are driving from Bengaluru, stopping at Srirangapatna on the way into Mysore saves a separate trip.

Which vehicle to choose

Two or three travellers fit comfortably in a Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios. For elders and larger families attending rituals, an Ertiga, Innova or Innova Crysta provides more space and comfort. School groups, pilgrim parties and family gatherings can book a Tempo Traveller, Force Urbania or mini bus.

Best time to visit

October to March is the most pleasant season for walking among the monuments. Ranganathittu is at its liveliest during the nesting season, which generally runs through the cooler months into early summer. From April to May, afternoons are hot, so plan outdoor sights for mornings and evenings. In the monsoon, the Kaveri runs high and the island turns green, though boat rides may be suspended when the river is in spate.

Tips for visitors

  • Temples close for a few hours in the afternoon, so plan darshan for the morning or evening.
  • Carry water and a hat for the monuments, which have little shade.
  • Footwear must be removed at temples and at the Gumbaz.
