A gateway city with plenty to see

Many visitors pass through Coimbatore on the way to the hills, but the city and its surroundings deserve a day or two of their own. Known as the Manchester of South India for its textile industry, it also has a strong food culture, a pleasant climate thanks to the Palakkad Gap, and important temples within an hour's drive. A cab is the easiest way to combine city errands with trips to the edge of the Ghats.

Places to visit in and around Coimbatore

Spiritual sites

  • Isha Yoga Centre and Adiyogi: about 30 km west, at the foot of the Velliangiri mountains, with the Dhyanalinga meditation space and the giant Adiyogi bust. Evening visits are popular for the light and sound show, held on select days.
  • Marudamalai: a hill temple to Lord Murugan on the western edge of the city.
  • Perur Pateeswarar Temple: a centuries-old Shiva temple with remarkable stone carving.
  • Eachanari Vinayagar Temple: a much-visited Ganesha temple on the Pollachi road.

Nature and day trips

  • Siruvani and Kovai Kutralam: forest waterfalls west of the city; entry depends on forest department rules and the season.
  • Valparai: tea estates and hairpin roads in the Anamalai hills, a long but rewarding day trip.
  • Topslip and Aliyar: the Anamalai Tiger Reserve and a dam near Pollachi.
  • Black Thunder: a water theme park near Mettupalayam, popular with families.

Airport and railway station transfers

Coimbatore International Airport is at Peelamedu, on the eastern side of the city along Avinashi Road. We provide pickups and drops for all flights, including transfers straight from the airport to Ooty, Coonoor or the Isha Yoga Centre. Coimbatore Junction is the main railway station, close to the city centre, and Coimbatore North and Podanur handle some trains. Check your ticket for the right station.

Outstation cabs from Coimbatore

  • Ooty: about three hours via Mettupalayam and the Coonoor ghat, the most popular trip from the city.
  • Mysore: via Sathyamangalam and the Dhimbam ghat, or via the Nilgiris and Bandipur; both routes involve forest timings.
  • Bangalore: via Salem, Krishnagiri and Hosur on a fast multi-lane highway.
  • Coorg: a long drive through Mysore, or via the Nilgiris and Gudalur.
  • Madurai: south-east via Palladam and Dindigul.
  • Chennai: a full-day drive via Salem and Vellore.
  • Salem: around three hours along NH 544, convenient for business trips and Yercaud.

Neighbourhoods we serve

We pick up and drop across the city, including Gandhipuram, RS Puram, Race Course, Peelamedu, Saravanampatti, Singanallur, Saibaba Colony, Ramanathapuram, Vadavalli, Kuniyamuthur and Ganapathy, along with industrial areas on the Avinashi and Mettupalayam roads and colleges on the city's outskirts.

Business and group travel

Coimbatore hosts trade fairs, textile and machinery buyers, and a large student population. For visiting clients, we can arrange cars for full-day factory visits or airport-to-hotel runs. Wedding guests, college trips and pilgrim groups heading to Isha, Velliangiri or Palani can travel together in a Tempo Traveller (12+1), Force Urbania (16+1) or mini bus.

Choosing the right car

A Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios is ideal for city transfers and business trips. For the ghat road to Ooty or a family holiday, an Ertiga, Innova or Innova Crysta offers more comfort and luggage space. Let us know about your plans when booking and we will suggest the most suitable option. Travellers heading on into Kerala, to Palakkad, Thrissur or Kochi, can book the same vehicle for the onward leg, with interstate permits arranged in advance.

Weather and when to visit

Coimbatore's climate is milder than most of Tamil Nadu, though April and May can still be hot. The southwest monsoon brings light to moderate rain and breezy days from June to September, while the northeast monsoon adds rain in October and November. The most comfortable period for sightseeing is from November to February, which is also the best time for Valparai and the waterfalls after the rains.

Local tips

  • Kovai is known for its biryani, Kongunadu-style chicken and filter coffee; ask your driver for favourites.
  • For Ooty trips in peak season, leave early to avoid queues at the Mettupalayam and Kallar check points.
  • Visitors to Isha should check the timings for the Dhyanalinga and the dress guidelines in advance.
  • Traffic on Avinashi Road and around Gandhipuram is heaviest in the evenings, so plan airport drops accordingly.
