Leaving the island, the road passes around Mysore's ring road and continues south to Nanjangud, the temple town on the Kabini. The highway crosses Chamarajanagar district and enters the forest near Punajanur before reaching Hasanur and the head of the Dhimbam Ghat. Its 27 hairpins descend through the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve to Bannari, after which the road runs through Sathyamangalam and Annur into Coimbatore. The forest section is narrow and winding, and drivers keep speeds low as elephants are occasionally seen.
Because night traffic restrictions apply through the forest, departure times from Srirangapatna are planned so that the reserve is crossed in daylight. The forest is lush after the monsoon, and elephants, deer and gaur are often seen from the road; stopping and feeding animals is not allowed.
