A Coimbatore to Ooty cab is the classic way to reach the Queen of Hill Stations, covering about 85 km in 2.5–3 hours. From Coimbatore the road runs north through Thudiyalur and Karamadai to Mettupalayam, the base of the Nilgiris. The climb begins almost immediately, with 14 hairpin bends rising through Kallar and Burliar as the temperature drops and the vegetation changes to forest and tea. Coonoor, about two-thirds of the way up, is a good stop for tea and viewpoints, after which the road continues through Wellington and Lovedale into Ooty. Uphill traffic can be heavy on weekends and holidays, especially in summer, so an early start helps.
Any season works for this trip, but timing matters: holiday weekends between April and June bring long queues on the hill roads, and monsoon fog can slow the hairpins. A weekday departure or an early start keeps the Coimbatore to Ooty drive close to 2.5–3 hours.
Uphill hairpins with luggage are easier in an Ertiga or Innova, though a sedan is fine for couples. Choose a Swift Dzire or Etios for light luggage and up to four travellers, an Ertiga or Innova for six to seven, or an Innova Crysta when you want the most comfortable ride over 85 km.
