A Mangalore to Ooty cab is a full-day journey of around 390 km, taking 9–10 hours. The route climbs through the Sampaje Ghat to Madikeri, crosses the Mysore plains and then passes through the Bandipur and Mudumalai tiger reserves before the final ghat ascent into the Nilgiris. Because night traffic restrictions apply through the forest, an early-morning start from Mangalore is essential.

One-way fares are charged on at least 130 km. Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Mangalore (780 km over 2 days, with a daily minimum). Toll, parking and state permit are extra.
From Mangalore the road follows NH275 via Puttur and Sullia, climbing the Sampaje Ghat to Madikeri and continuing past Kushalnagar to Hunsur. Drivers usually bypass central Mysore and head to Nanjangud and Gundlupet, where the road enters Bandipur National Park and then Tamil Nadu's Mudumalai reserve at Theppakadu. From Mudumalai there are two ways up: the steep Kalhatti Ghat via Masinagudi, or the longer, gentler road through Gudalur and Naduvattam. The driver chooses based on current rules and conditions, and the last climb brings you into Ooty.
Night traffic restrictions apply through the forest reserves between Mangalore and Ooty, so plan to cross the reserves in daylight. Monsoon months bring heavy rain to the forest belt and hairpins, while October to May is generally dry. Wildlife sightings from the road are common, but drivers do not stop inside the reserve.
This is a long day with two ghat sections, so most families choose an Innova or Innova Crysta for the extra comfort. Tell us how many people and bags are travelling and we will suggest a vehicle: a Swift Dzire or Etios for small parties, an Ertiga, Innova or Innova Crysta for families, or a Tempo Traveller 12+1, Force Urbania 16+1 or mini bus for groups.
