Getting from Kempegowda International Airport to Ooty is a proper road trip: about 320 km across the Mysore plateau, through the Bandipur and Mudumalai forests and up into the Nilgiris. Timing matters more on this route than on almost any other from the airport, because the forest highway closes to traffic at night. Savari Holidays plans your Bangalore Airport to Ooty cab around your landing time, tracks the flight, meets you at arrivals and chooses the right road for the hour. Expect seven and a half to eight and a half hours of travel on the standard route through the forests.

One-way fares include fuel and driver allowance (minimum 130 km). Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Bangalore Airport, billed at the round-trip rate with a daily minimum. Tolls, parking and interstate permits are extra where they apply. Tempo Travellers, Urbania and mini buses are available for round trips.
The fastest road to Ooty runs through Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu. To protect wildlife, this stretch is closed to most traffic from 9 PM to 6 AM. If your flight lands in the afternoon or evening, a cab leaving the airport may simply not reach the Bandipur check post before it shuts. That is why we ask for your landing time first and plan the trip from there.
Land in the morning and you can drive straight through. The route follows the Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway, skirts Mysore, continues via Nanjangud to Gundlupet and enters Bandipur. After Mudumalai and Theppakadu, the climb to Ooty goes either via the steep Kalhatti ghat with its 36 hairpin bends or the longer, gentler road through Gudalur. Our driver picks the ghat based on your vehicle, any motion sickness in the group and the rules in force that day.
For afternoon or late-night arrivals, many travellers drive to Mysore, about four hours from KIA, sleep there and set off for Ooty after breakfast. You pass through the forests in daylight, often spotting deer, langurs and sometimes elephants along the road, and you reach the hills fresh.
If you must travel through the night, there is a longer route that avoids the forests altogether: south via Hosur, Krishnagiri and Salem to Coimbatore and Mettupalayam, then up the Coonoor ghat to Ooty. It adds considerable distance and time, but it is open around the clock.
In recent seasons, vehicles entering the Nilgiris district have needed an e-pass, and checks at the district border can include restrictions on plastic items. Rules change from time to time, so our team confirms the current requirements before your trip and helps with any registration needed for the vehicle. Avoid carrying single-use plastic bottles and bags; the Nilgiris has strict rules on these.
Keep a warm layer handy. Ooty can be chilly even in summer, and from December to February nights can drop close to freezing. If anyone in the group is prone to motion sickness, mention it; the Gudalur route is gentler than Kalhatti, and short breaks help on the hairpins. Carry water and some snacks, since stopping inside the tiger reserves is not allowed.
An Ertiga, Innova or Innova Crysta handles the ghat roads comfortably and has space for warm clothing and luggage. Couples can travel in a Swift Dzire or Etios without any trouble. Families and groups planning a Nilgiris holiday together can book a Tempo Traveller or Force Urbania; note that very large vehicles may be directed to the Gudalur road rather than Kalhatti.
Since you will reach Ooty after a long day, keep the first evening light: a walk around Charing Cross or the lake area is plenty. Save the Botanical Garden, Doddabetta and Pykara for the following days, or book the same cab for local sightseeing. If you are staying in Coonoor or Kotagiri instead, let us know; the final stretch differs and the drop is door to door. Peak season in the Nilgiris runs from April to June, when hotels and roads fill up quickly, so book the transfer as soon as your flight is confirmed.

Not through the forests, which close from 9 PM to 6 AM. You can either stay overnight in Mysore and continue in the morning, or take the longer plains route via Salem, Coimbatore and Mettupalayam, which stays open all night.
On the standard route through Bandipur and Mudumalai, about seven and a half to eight and a half hours for roughly 320 km. The Salem and Coimbatore route takes noticeably longer.
Vehicles entering the Nilgiris have required an e-pass in recent seasons. Requirements can change, so our team checks the current rules before your trip and helps with the process.
It is steep, with 36 hairpin bends, but our drivers handle it regularly. If anyone is prone to motion sickness or you are in a large vehicle, the driver may prefer the gentler Gudalur road.
