The Mangalore to Mysore route

From Mangalore the road heads inland via BC Road and Puttur, then follows the Payaswini valley to Sullia. The Sampaje Ghat climbs through thick evergreen forest to Madikeri, the hill capital of Coorg, at a little over 1,100 metres. Beyond Madikeri the road drops gently through coffee plantations to Kushalnagar and Bylakuppe, then crosses the Hunsur–Periyapatna farmland before entering Mysore. It is a varied drive: coastal palms, forest hairpins, misty hill country and finally the open plateau, all in one day.

Road tips for this drive

  • The Sampaje Ghat has tight bends; drivers keep a steady pace, especially in rain or fog.
  • Madikeri is the natural midway stop for lunch and a quick look at Raja's Seat.
  • Allow an extra hour if you plan to visit the Golden Temple at Bylakuppe.

Best time to travel

The southwest monsoon (June to September) brings very heavy rain to the coast and the ghats between Mangalore and Mysore. Driving is slower, visibility drops and the occasional landslide can close a ghat for a while, so keep buffer time and let us suggest the open route on the day. October to March is the easiest season on this road.

Choosing your vehicle

Because the route includes a forest ghat, a comfortable sedan or SUV with experienced hill driving makes the day easier. A sedan (Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios) is the practical choice for up to four people. Pick an Ertiga, Innova or Innova Crysta for families and extra bags, and a Tempo Traveller, Force Urbania or mini bus when the whole group wants to travel to Mysore together.

Mangalore to Mysore cab: frequently asked questions

Which road does the Mangalore to Mysore taxi use?

NH275 via Puttur, Sullia, the Sampaje Ghat, Madikeri, Kushalnagar and Hunsur. It is the most direct and scenic route.

Is the Sampaje Ghat safe in the monsoon?

It stays open most of the season, but heavy rain slows driving and occasional slips cause delays. Our drivers check conditions and allow extra time.

Can we stop in Coorg on the way?

Yes. Madikeri and Bylakuppe are directly on the route, so short sightseeing stops fit easily into a one-way trip.
