Chikmagalur is where coffee first took root in India, and today it is one of Karnataka's favourite hill escapes, with Mullayanagiri, the state's highest peak, rising above the town. From Mysore the drive covers about 180 km through Hassan district and takes around four hours. What makes this route special is what lies along it: the Jain pilgrimage centre of Shravanabelagola and the Hoysala temples of Belur and Halebidu, now part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing, are all within easy reach. Our Mysore to Chikmagalur cab can turn a simple transfer into a heritage day.

One-way fares include fuel and driver allowance (minimum 130 km). Round-trip fares are for the same car returning to Mysore, billed at the round-trip rate with a daily minimum. Tolls, parking and interstate permits are extra where they apply. Tempo Travellers, Urbania and mini buses are available for round trips.
If you only want to reach your homestay, the direct road via KR Nagar, Holenarasipura and Hassan gets you to Chikmagalur in around four hours. But because three of Karnataka's finest monuments sit close to this route, many travellers turn the journey into a full day. Here is how the two options compare.
Leave Mysore in the morning, take a breakfast break near Holenarasipura or Hassan, and reach Chikmagalur by lunch. Good for weekend breaks where you want maximum time on the estate.
This version takes ten to eleven hours with sightseeing, so a 7 am start is ideal.
Most visitors stay on coffee estates or in resorts rather than in town. Some are on the Mullayanagiri road north of town, others towards Kemmangundi, Aldur, Mudigere or Kalasa. Estate roads can be narrow and steep, and a few properties ask guests to switch to a jeep for the final stretch. Share your property details when booking and our team will tell you whether a sedan will make it or whether an Ertiga or Innova is a wiser choice.
Chikmagalur's main sights are spread across the hills:
If you book a round trip, your driver can take you to most of these. Some places, such as Hebbe Falls and Jhari Falls, are only accessible by local jeeps, which your driver can help arrange.
October to March offers cool, clear weather and is peak season; weekends fill up fast. The coffee blossom, a white carpet across the estates with a jasmine-like scent, usually appears in March or April after the first showers. The monsoon from June to September is very wet, with leeches on the trails and slippery estate roads, but the waterfalls and mist are magical.
For two people on a weekend break, a Dzire or Etios works well on the main roads. For families or for stays on estate roads, an Innova or Innova Crysta is more comfortable. Office teams and friends' groups heading for an estate getaway can book a tempo traveller, though some estate roads cannot take larger vehicles; we will check with you first.
There is no forest closure on the main route, so departure times are flexible. Mobile coverage weakens in parts of the hills, so keep your homestay's landline or host number handy. Fuel and the driver's allowance are included in your quoted fare; parking fees at monuments and any toll on the way are extra. If you are combining Chikmagalur with Sakleshpur, Coorg or the coast, ask for a multi-day itinerary and we will plan the loop.
Finally, pack for cool evenings even in summer, and carry cash for small purchases. Estate coffee, sold at outlets in town and on many plantations, is the souvenir everyone takes home.
